adventures of mascarah.

I've just begun a new decade. Sigh.

I have always wanted to be "a writer" but I'm lost somewhere in the prologue...whittling away at a story I may never tell.

Likes: pop culture. my chihuahua. architecture. modern art. elizabeth street. contemporary designer apparel. food. travel. foreign films. speakeasys. live music. politics. hot sauce. surprises. running in the rain. strangers. wednesdays. fearlessness...and 100s of other random things... maybe even you.

A southerner by birth, northerner by the grace of God, I'm simply a nyc gal who is lost somewhere on my constant exploration of the city and the life, love, and pursuit found within it.

Life: EAT: Blue Hill

In honor of President Obama’s dining experience last night, I feel compelled to share my quickie review on Blue Hill. You all know I’m a huge fan of their upstate Pocatino Hills farm, which in-season boasts a Farmer’s Feast.…a yummy multi-course progressive meal that is nearly all created from in-farm ingredients. It takes fresh to an entirely new level.

Blue Hill in the city definitely isn’t on the same level of the farm. If you can go to the farm and stomach the $150 + per person that it is going to run you, then you should go. It is a meal everyone should have at least once.

However, Blue Hill is still some damn good eats. Tucked away in a small Washington Place abode, it’s seasonal American food is reminiscent of its Hudson Valley origins, very fresh and flavorful, and quite delicious. Like many of the reviews on Yelp state, dining there seems to be hit or miss at times, but I have had one miss in more than 20 visits. I think the consensus is - avoid the chicken entree.

My favorites [on the current menu] include:

Appetizers:

  • This Morning’s Farm Egg
  • Spanish Mackerel
  • Stone Barns Spinach & Ramp Ravioli
  • Spring Vegetable Salad

Main:

  • Klaas Martens’ Emmer and Quinoa
  • Grass fed Lamb
  • Berkshire Pig (the best!)
  • Cobia

Sides:

  • Marinated Beets
  • Hudson Valley Asparagus
  • Creamy Wintered Over Parsnips

Desserts:

  • Chocolate Bread Pudding [Mary, you’d love this]
  • HoneyCrisp Apple
  • Rhubarb [my favvvv]
  • Old & New Cheese Plate is exceptional also
