adventures of mascarah.

I've just begun a new decade. Sigh.

I have always wanted to be "a writer" but I'm lost somewhere in the prologue...whittling away at a story I may never tell.

Likes: pop culture. my chihuahua. architecture. modern art. elizabeth street. contemporary designer apparel. food. travel. foreign films. speakeasys. live music. politics. hot sauce. surprises. running in the rain. strangers. wednesdays. fearlessness...and 100s of other random things... maybe even you.

A southerner by birth, northerner by the grace of God, I'm simply a nyc gal who is lost somewhere on my constant exploration of the city and the life, love, and pursuit found within it.

I’ve been around the block long enough to really be above getting upset when someone says something rude about me online, but in this case I just feel like I have to respond, so here it goes…

Dear Blackbook,

  • Corton is not “between 14th and Canal” it is below.
  • Ditto on Laconda Verde, so your argument about me only giving props to those within that range is just invalid.
  • In fact, those two restaurants cater to Fidi in many ways similar to Sho, if you don’t believe me just go in on any week night, post-work day. Plenty of striped button-up shirts.
  • I dont like Sho because in *my* experience the food was below my expectations, which were set high because of people like you who claim their food to be “ahead of the game”
  • Ditto on Marea, although I said I “don’t love” it, not hate it as in the case with Sho. Honestly, it comes down to paying for what you get and there I felt ripped off because the entire experience didn’t deliver compared to the meal cost. If I’m going to pay $50 + for a piece of fish it isn’t going to be there. I’d rather eat Halibut at Dovetail or BLT Market, both uptown restaurants. I find both their food and in the case of BLT Market, their atmosphere, to be better.
  • What is “so typical” isn’t that I like restaurants in some Canal/14 St block (although you seem to have forgotten where these restaurants actually are), it is that a snarky person as yourself would make elitist generalizations like that someone who eats in downtown only dines in a room booming with Jay Z.
  • I like restaurants in all zipcodes, in fact my favorite wayyyy up and outta town is Blue Hill at Stone Barns, which to me, is really “ahead of the game”
  • The only restaurant I know of that actually plays the Hov regularly is Fatty Crab, and that wasn’t even a part of this convo (although you’re right I do love it)
  • I don’t want to hate Sho, I really actually wanted to like it. I have many friends who love it. I just don’t.
  • I’d love to hear how exactly Marea is “ahead of the game” and what your source is on Sho serving food cheaper because of an owner investment in “longevity”? This hardly seems like the objective opinion of a journalistic publication.
  • And if it isn’t the opinion of Blackbook, then you should probably have a disclosure on your blog as to who is writing what, you know…transparency and all.

Cheers,

S

Ps- Esquire loves Marea & Sho and their opinion is far superior than mine :)
