adventures of mascarah.

I've just begun a new decade. Sigh.

I have always wanted to be "a writer" but I'm lost somewhere in the prologue...whittling away at a story I may never tell.

Likes: pop culture. my chihuahua. architecture. modern art. elizabeth street. contemporary designer apparel. food. travel. foreign films. speakeasys. live music. politics. hot sauce. surprises. running in the rain. strangers. wednesdays. fearlessness...and 100s of other random things... maybe even you.

A southerner by birth, northerner by the grace of God, I'm simply a nyc gal who is lost somewhere on my constant exploration of the city and the life, love, and pursuit found within it.

21C Museum Hotel in Louisville, Kentucky. Voted the #1 hotel in the US & #6 in the world (!) by Conde Nast Traveler Readers

I literally shrieked with happiness when I heard this news! I had the privilege of staying at 21C in August 2006 when I moved from Texas to NYC and did my cross country drive. I can honestly say (with a bit of bias) that it was one of my favorite hotel experiences ever. The modern art is immersed in all parts of the hotel experience and the hotel’s restaurant, Proof, stands on its own asĀ  notable, innovative & delicious. Louisville, as a city, is also far more complex than one might assume - tons of art, baseball, the derby, a growing downtown & boat gambling! :)

I arrived at the hotel courtesy of one of my first NYC friends. This friend, Michael, left his NYC restaurant empire behind and traded it in for the opportunity to take this fantastic hotel in Louisville and help it grow and thrive and expand into other cities.

It takes a lot of guts to leave a very successful career and chart an entirely new path. I’m constantly inspired by people, like Michael, who fight for what they want, follow their dreams and heart and gut, and do something that to some, might appear to be quite a risk.

I often wonder when my moment will come….when I will have the courage to fight for my dreams…. And I often grow afraid that when it comes, I won’t have the guts to step up and take the opportunity.

I feel so lucky to have friends like Michael who show me constantly that you can chart your own path and end up in the place you want to be, and if you’re really lucky that place will be covered with 4 foot tall red plastic penguins.
