[Pursuit: 6 Cents] Testing the Juicy Waters

Today I am getting to try out some of the Blueprint Cleanse juices courtesy of Mary. (aka super good influence) This one is a green juice with romaine, celery, cucumber, kale, parsley, green apple, spinach and lemon.

It is light and refreshing while still filling. Honestly.

The truth is that while I love bacon/egg sandwiches and Sugar Free Red Bull (like really , really love - especially the latter) this is truly feeling like a better start to the day. I definitely can’t afford to drink it on the regular but incorporating fresh green juice into my diet is on my agenda. I’m getting older (as we all are - but I’m starting to reconcile it) and it’s about time to focus a bit more on what I put into my body….just a little bit.

(Side note: Erin, I’m going to cave and see Food Inc. EEK!)

[Pursuit: 6 Cents] My Bag Cares
I’m a huge fan of tote bags for the obvious grocery/eco reasons but also because in this city, you have to lug around a lot of shit.
Going home inbetween work/gym/yoga/drinks/dinner is often a hinderance to a smooth day of navigation and I find that I get frustrated if I don’t have everything with me until I’m ready to head home and call it a day.
Enter My Bag Cares.
I’ve had tons of totes from Marc Jacobs (quite a steal at his Bleecker St store), FEED, various Etsy vendors, Banana/Gap, and countless other places.
But none I love more than this My Bag Cares.
I bought one after seeing Mary’s and I feel in love. It is soft and easy to cram into my purse. The fabric is soft yet still sturdy and holds all my gym gear or an entire picnic setup with easy. It is roomy and large while being managable.
And of course on top of that awesome benefit analysis I just did for you - it supports a great cause and is only $25.
Let’s face it - at this point you look like an asshole if you go into Whole Foods and use paper bags. Grab one of these puppies, I guarantee a single bag can hold at least 2 paper bags full of food.

[Pursuit: 6 Cents] Sweet, Sweet Virgin.
With cheeky marketing, fantastic amenties and an out of the box approach to a stale industry it is no surprise that Virgin’s come in and dominated their small sliver of the market segment.
Having flown them now more than 15 (20?) times in my NY-SF journey (and to Vegas and LaLa land too), I feel compelled to jump on the bandwagon and pile my 6 cents on my Virgin experiences to-date on top of those already shared by the masses…

Lights are a bit cheesy, music even cheesier
RED system is good, works 80% of the time
Food ordering = awesome (although still not great in quality)
Chat system is strange - more on that and weird sexual advances later
Flight times to SF/NYC are limited but generally pretty good for a business traveller
Prices are fantastic if you’re 14 days out
Airline crew are either really nice or really rude. I have had both.
There’s one gentleman in particular who does the NY/SF trip a lot (blonde, over-gelled hair - SUPER FREAKING RUDE)
Boarding them at JFK is a biotch during peak times because it is near an International boarding area - major language barriers with security
Pet friendly for the most part  (see over-gelled man reference above who provided my only bad experience to-date)
Definitely more friendly and accomodating, generally speaking, than Jet Blue

[I’m so not a first class flyer as you can tell from the view above. Maybe someday….]

[Pursuit: 6 Cents ] San Marzano & a Movie
My friends and I have been trying to find more affordable ways to get out of the house and have a good time without spending a ton of money. Cutting back on dining out is an obvious way to save $$ but I’m a foodie - and not eating out at all is unrealistic for me. I’d prioritize good food over shoes or handbags or rent anyday.
One of my favorite nights out with my gals is to go to San Marzano (or Cube 63 if you’re in the sushi mode - both are sans corking fees too and conveniently on my street).
Pizzas at San Marzano serve 2 people (even a guy/girl), are between $11-$14, are yummy. And the restaurant’s environment is casual and perfect in the spring/summertime with full open floor to ceiling doors.
Favorites on their menu include:

Bianca (pictured above) - fontina, gorgonzola, proscuitto, onions
Quattro Formagi - mozzarella, fontina, gorgonzola, ricotta
Margherita - (classic)
They also have an awesome Caprese, a great meat/cheese plate and fabulous chicken filled Calzones.

There is a wine/beer shop (Stanton between Clinton and Attorney) less than a block away that sells a fantastic selection of Barefoot and other affordable wines - so all in you’re looking at $14 (pizza) + $10 (wine) = $24 dinner date + a $4.95 movie on demand at home afterwards or a wander through the neighborhood (we put the rest of the wine in plastic cups and stroll)…perfection.

[Pursuit: 6 Cents ] DBGB
Wow this has been a heavy food week! I apologize for all the heavy food posts. I swear, onto more puppies and tuneage and other stuff soon. Until then.
I want to give my brief weigh in on Daniel Boulud’s new joint in the Avalon monstrosity on Bowery (229 Bowery) called DBGB.
Going on = zero expectations. His truffle burger is legendary, but an entire joint? I thought it would be like the Burger Joint @ Le Parker Meridian had a baby with an insincere frenchman, it just wouldn’t make sense.  And some of the menu is like that - displaced (although still good quality) in a restaurant that’s menu is clearly driven by 3 things: beer, burgers & sausage. The latter knocking it out of the park.
Some standouts:

Spicy Crab Cake
Matzoh Ball Soup
Grilled Octopus
Eggplant Caviar
Duck meatballs
Crispy Lamb Ribs
Mackerel & Capers Tartine
Piggie Burger (have to get at least one, this is the best!)
And most importantly…any and all sausages our fav was Viennoise

I didn’t get to try the regular DBGB dog, but it looked tasty. Full menu here.
Order beer. This is definitely a beer joint. Their list is good and affordable (mostly $7 drafts)

[Pursuit: 6 Cents] : Ted Gibson Beauty
Mary generously gifted me two awesome Ted Gibson products and I have fallen in love. Here’s my 6 cents on the two of them.
Build It - Blow Drying Agent: light and airy, this awesome spray seems to add just the right amount of body to my heavy, thick hair. I can definitely tell when I blow dry with my round brush that it gives it a slight lift. And more importantly, it also gives me a great, silky shine.
Tame it- Shine Lotion: I love this product even better than the one above. I’ve always been scared of productions with a lotion consistency because I am so prone to oil (oily skin, oily hair, eek!) but I have been pleasantly surprised by this. I use it each time I shower and it has done wonders for calming my frizz and flyaways. I can even tell a difference on my damaged ends.
Buying products like these would never occur to me, I’ve been a Kerastase or cheapo Herbal Essences basics gal for a long time. Although I love products I definitely don’t know my way around them (before Mary I couldn’t even properly apply lipgloss!)
Next up, I’m swinging by a Sephora or Target (yup, his products are sold at Target, how cool is that?) to pick up his Hair Color Shampoo (comes in colors!) in clear. I highly recommend both the products above. Fabulous. Semi-affordable.  Make a huge difference.
PS - Isn’t it crazy that here it is much easier to get to a Sephora than a Target? Only in NYC.
