adventures of mascarah.

I've just begun a new decade. Sigh.

I have always wanted to be "a writer" but I'm lost somewhere in the prologue...whittling away at a story I may never tell.

Likes: pop culture. my chihuahua. architecture. modern art. elizabeth street. contemporary designer apparel. food. travel. foreign films. speakeasys. live music. politics. hot sauce. surprises. running in the rain. strangers. wednesdays. fearlessness...and 100s of other random things... maybe even you.

A southerner by birth, northerner by the grace of God, I'm simply a nyc gal who is lost somewhere on my constant exploration of the city and the life, love, and pursuit found within it.

So it’s been a week.

I cheated on the digital cleanse by tweeting (as caught by Georgina :)) I couldn’t help it. The Longhorns hold my heart (and unfortunately not the national championship).

But I didn’t cheat here actually…although I certainly did mentally. Random things I would’ve blogged this week:

  • Kate Gosselin with weave on the cover of People?! This is why Europeans hate Americans.
  • So JM’s Digital Cleanse: honestly I didn’t miss technology one bit. Or blogging. Maybe that’s a sign it is time to stop.
  • I wouldn’t have cheated but my JOB is social marketing, so I had to. I really had no desire to engage in anything other than Ebay online.
  • I think I want to move to an island somewhere and just live on the beach with a man who likes me and respects me and makes me laugh. Just a little house on the beach. That’s all I need.
  • Oh + Elle would have to come too.
  • Who the heck is Casey Johnson and why is she a trending topic on Twitter?
  • Apparently psychologically one’s 29th year is the hardest. Fantastic. T minus 3 months til that roller coaster begins
  • People, please stop with this fromspring thing - enough with the perpetual Q/A session.
  • Celebrity Rehab is disgusting. These people don’t need tv, they need help.
  • 2010 has started off not the best for me + some of my friends. Let’s hope it gets better
  • Like you, I’m hooked on Jersey Shore.
  • Why don’t people treat one another with respect and honesty? Why waste so much time lying and being hurtful?
  • I hate Coldplay.
  • I love Beirut - that was my holiday soundtrack.
  • I went to Europe and fell in love with “trainers” - yup, I’m officially wearing flat shoes (sometimes), a miracle right friends?
  • In some ways that picture of Gerard Butler as a total fatty makes me like him more. Is that weird?
  • I also fell in love with fish & chips. I wonder if I could live my life without fried food?
  • 3 sappy movies I can’t wait to see: Valentine’s Day, Dear John (Nicholas Sparks! NC!), Letters to Juliet
  • A movie you all can’t afford not to see (it’s so good): A Single Man
  • Amanda Seyfried is in like every single movie this year. She must be leaving Big Love
  • Oooh, I can’t wait for Big Love to start. Too bad I had to cancel HBO because Time Warner Cable are such assholes. I need to write a post about that actually…it deserves an entire post.
  • Yummm Laconda Verde - eat there NYers.
  • God, I’m so hungover. I wonder if I can spend 2010 without any more hangovers?
  • I’m behind on your blogs (all of you) so tell me, what’s new?

[Life: List’d] The Bucket List - 9 Places to Eat Fried Chicken Before You Die (or It Kills You)

This is NY Mag’s list. I’m in the process of compiling my own and will share next week. I grew up in the south. I could bathe in fried chicken, mashed taters, grits and biscuits and gravy…well maybe not bathe, but you know what I mean.

Their list:

  1. Momofuku Noodle Bar
  2. Rack & Soul
  3. Laconda Verde
  4. Perry St
  5. The Redhead
  6. Brooklyn Bowl
  7. Blue Smoke
  8. Buttermilk Channel
  9. Roberta’s
[Life: List’d] French! Fries!
As anyone who has dined with me knows, pomme frites are my utter and total weakness. I could/would/do eat them anytime, anyplace, on any occasion. Brunch? Why not! 2 a.m.? Why not! Hours before a 1/2 marathon? Definitely.
I’ve only been a NYer for 3 years and I’m still on the hunt for the BEST FRIES EVER but for now, here are a few of my favorites (and I’d love to know yours as well!)
Pommes Frites: belgian style, nationally acclaimed, amazing dipping sauces, open late night
Balthazar: crisp french classic, served morning, noon and night
Loreley: thin, not too greasy, goes well with German beers
JG Melon: cottage fries, somewhat of NY institution
Schiller’s (same recipe/owner as Balthazar)
Rare Bar & Grill: get a basket of fries with dipping sauces
Les Halles: eat with the mussels. YUMM!
Taim: super thin, right amount of crunch, super cheap - great with harissa spicy sauce
Nice Matin: steak fries, served with mayo (I pass on the mayo, but I know many love)
Shake Shack: because you can’t eat a double stack without fries
Spotted Pig: Shoestring delights! Some hate the shoestring but I love it
Union Square Cafe: another famous little fry, crisp, good texture, not too greasy
Telepan: a late night carefully crafted foodie favorite
Artisanal: classically french, completely delicious
Cafe de Bruxelles: belgian crisp delights! just the right amount of salt
Pastis: see Balthazar
Bar Boulud: If they’re good enough for Daniel…
Shopsin’s: go for the cheesy ones, you won’t regret it
Five Guys: steak style, super thick, good amount of crunch, loads of salt

[Life: List’d] Falafel in the City
I went on a date recently where the guy didn’t know what a falafel was (the horror!) Since then, I’ve had falafel on the brain.
I’m not enough of a falafel connoisseur to have a preference of Arabic versus Israeli nor to note the composition of the tahini. But I can tell if a pita is homemade or not and whether not my taste buds are loving the flavors.  So far my favorites are Taim (Israeli style, homemade pitas) and Malmoun’s (Arabic style, bought pitas) but here is a list I’m going to check out - hopefully all this year.
Alfanoose 150 Fulton St Tasting notes: super thin pita, extra spicy, crunchy pickled veggies (and homemade pickles - cucumber and turnip based!) ($4-$6).
Azuri Cafe 465 W. 51st St. Tasting notes: Seems to be a crowd favorite online. Must try! Supposedly the best hummus in the city, lots of zhug and amba, and soft pillowy pita ($4-$5.50).
Cinderella Falafel 129 2nd Ave, off of St. MarksTasting notes: tons of “special” sandwiches and a yogurt-based tzatziki ($5-$7)
Hoomoos Asli 100 Kenmare StreetTasting notes: local foodies seem to rave about their “hoomos” which you can get in a sandwich for the odd price of $4.61 or in a plate of 5 or 8 for $5 and $7 respectively. (Also, they deliver all the way deep into Tribeca!)
Mamoun’s 119 Macdougal St Tasting notes: Super standard basic falafel - falafal, lettuce, tomato and tahini. ($3).
Miriam’s Sixth Ave. at 46th St., Tasting notes: Loaded with hot sauce and tomatoes - super thick pita. ($4).
Moshe’s Falafel Cart 94 West 46th StreetTasting notes: Overly stuffed with fresh veggies, a work lunch sidewalk steal at $4.75.
Moustache265 East 10th StreetTasting notes: This Iraqui owned joint features all homemade ingredients, hummus that gets raves and a $6.50 falafel sandwich.
Oasis 161 North 7th, WilliamsburgTasting notes: $3 a sandwich, $6 a solid plate. Mixed reviews (love/hate) but perhaps worth checking out?
Olympic Pita 1419 Coney Island Ave., Brooklyn and 58 W 38th st, Manhattan Tasting notes: Distinctly Israeli in style, kosher, and served inside sturdy lafah bread. Tons of toppings (order the fried eggplant!) ($4-$8).
Pick a Pita 247 W 38th St.Tasting Notes: You can get a platter for $9.50 or a pita for $5.50. For a quick and super fresh work bite in this area, word is it can’t be beat.
Rainbow Falafel & Shawarma 26 E. 17th St. Tasting notes: Super thin whole-wheat pita is healthy but frail, falafel has fantastic herbal taste, tons of fresh additions to pita ($4-$5)
Taim222 Waverly Place Tasting notes: Critics always deem this amongst the best. Lots of falafal falvor varieties (love the harrissa!), super fresh ingredients, great teas & smoothies to go with. On the expensive side for falafal. ($5-$9)
Waterfalls144 Atlantic Avenue, Brooklyn HeightsTasting notes: Go for the combo platter for two with the fried cauliflower. Prices range from $3.50 for a sandwich to $16.00 for a huge platter.
So NYers, what do you think? Any I left off the list?
